Image

The 'picture' you wish to view, e.g. a photograph or print, or more often, the display on a computer monitor showing the picture you require. An image file is a data file that stores the digital data relating to a 'picture'.

Imaging

The process of capturing, storing and subsequently retrieving information from physical images using scanning technology and digital storage.

Image file

The digital file that contains the data representing your 'picture'. Typical formats are TIFF and JPG.

IMAP

Internet Message Access Protocol
IMAP is a standard internet communication protocal that allows a local client to access e-mail on a remote server. IMAP4 and POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) are the two most prevalent Internet standard protocols for e-mail retrieval. Virtually all modern e-mail clients and servers support both.

Indexing

A system of using key words or numbers used to identify any file, that may be stored in a different location, for retrieval and viewing. For example, this could use a spreadsheet or database in one directory, used with links to files stored in a different directory.

Intranet

An intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise. It may consist of many interlinked local area networks and also use leased lines in the Wide Area Network. Typically, an intranet includes connections through one or more gateway computers to the outside Internet. The main purpose of an intranet is to share company information and computing resources among employees.

Internet

A worldwide interconnection of individual networks operated by government, industry, academia, and private parties.
